Sandler Hudson Gallery is pleased to present A Measure Without, a group exhibition featuring works by InKyoung Chun, Krista Clark, and Amy Pleasant. Through the creative approaches and mediums employed by each artist, the exhibition centers around the nuanced use of negative space. Along with the artist’s work, several makeshift walls are incorporated into the layout to accentuate and restructure the viewer's experience. The exhibition positions negative space as a wellspring of possibility, an uncharted territory to be explored and considered. With a spectrum of works from representational figuration to nonrepresentational abstraction, A Measure Without invokes negative space to define, dissolve, and reimagine the boundaries between figure and ground.
InKyoung Chun suspends figures in amorphous expanses of space that evoke both weightlessness and tension; Amy Pleasant renders her figures into flattened silhouettes, using a restrained palette and scrupulous attention to composition as figure and ground wrestle afloat; and Krista Clark abandons figuration altogether, orchestrating layered, cut, and assembled works that engage architectural language and material complexity. While each artist approaches negative space differently, their works together invite viewers to navigate shifting relationships between presence and absence, representation and abstraction, transforming the spaces between forms into sites of discovery.
A Measure Without proposes negative space not as a void, but as a generative presence—one that shapes how we perceive images and our relation to them.
